The PKP Secretary General downplayed the impact of the economic growth of 2.3% of GDP confirmed this Thursday by the National Statistical Institute (INE), noting that this figure does not represent a response to the difficulties of the people.
Speaking to journalists after a visit to the Lisbon Cerebral Palsy Association (APCL) in Telheiras, Paulo Raimundo highlighted the restrictions that exist in the institution and its users – such as difficulties in accessing or even obtaining passes – to ridicule the growing economy.
“Everything is good, everything is growing, it’s wonderful, and the financial difficulties are visible in this institution that we have seen. This is a great contradiction, everything is growing, everything is impressive, life is like those tomorrows that will never come, and then the real life of difficulties is here,” he emphasized.
Portugal’s economy grew 2.3% last year and 2.2% year-on-year in the fourth quarter, INE reported this Thursday, confirming a quick estimate from late January. As a result (compared to the previous quarter), INE also confirmed that gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.8% in the last quarter of 2023, avoiding a technical recession (two quarters in a row of contractions).
“Extraordinary economic growth figures are of little use to us, and this is not true. The €4.3 billion budget surplus does us little good when situations like those described here arise that need to be resolved. How does this surplus benefit us? budget? Few. Or better yet: nothing,” said the communist leader.
