The President of the Assembly of the Republic condemned the “incident” in the Gaza Strip with the death of civilians awaiting humanitarian assistance

The President of the Assembly of the Republic this Friday condemned what he classified as an “incident” in the Gaza Strip, in which Israeli forces opened fire on civilians waiting for food aid, resulting in the death of more than 100 people, and called for a ceasefire.

“Yesterday’s incident is reprehensible in every way. [quinta-feira] in the Gaza Strip when Israeli forces opened fire on civilians seeking food aid. We mourn more than 100 dead,” Augusto Santos Silva wrote in a message posted on social media.

The President of the Assembly of the Republic also noted that “since the start of this conflict” on October 7, “there have already been many thousands of civilian casualties from attacks by Hamas and Israel.”

“A ceasefire is urgent, as is the release of all hostages. Only recognition of Palestine’s right to be an independent state can resolve the conflict,” added Santos Silva.

At least 109 Gazans were killed and 760 injured early Thursday while awaiting the arrival of humanitarian aid carried by a caravan of 32 trucks, according to the Health Ministry, controlled by the Islamist Hamas movement, which blamed Israeli troops. .

For its part, the Israeli army denies attacking a humanitarian convoy in northern Gaza, saying the military guarantees the safety of the trucks and assuring that Israel is not restricting aid intended for the Palestinians.

Earlier, Israeli sources admitted to AFP that they fired live ammunition at the crowd.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “condemned the incident” in northern Gaza and expressed “alarm at the tragic human cost of the conflict.”

“Desperate civilians in the Gaza Strip need urgent help, including in the besieged north where the United Nations has been unable to provide assistance for more than a week,” Guterres spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

The Israeli army launched an offensive on the Gaza Strip in response to attacks by the Palestinian Islamist group on October 7 that killed nearly 1,200 people and abducted 240.

Since then, Gaza authorities have reported the deaths of more than 30,000 Palestinians, as well as more than 400 in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, as a result of security forces and Israeli attacks.
