Want to see snow this weekend? IPMA issues warning to ten districts in Portugal

Ten areas of mainland Portugal will be under a yellow warning for snowfall from 12:00 noon on Saturday, while seven districts will be under an orange warning due to forecast rough seas, the IPMA said.

According to a statement issued this Thursday by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), Porto, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro and Braga will be under a yellow warning for snow from 12:00 Saturday until 9:00. :00 on Sunday.

The warning in Bragança, Viseu, Guarda, Castelo Branco and Coimbra is in effect from 12:00 to 9:00 on Saturday.

In ten areas, a warning has been issued for snowfall of more than 700/900 meters and accumulation of up to 5 centimeters above 1000/1100 meters.

The IPMA also warned of possible impacts such as “disruption caused by snowfall with accumulation and possible ice formation”, conditioning or closure of roads, damage to buildings or trees or damage to local supplies.

For Castelo Branco and Guarda, the IPMA said snow accumulation could exceed 10 centimeters at the highest points of the Serra da Estrela.

Seven areas of the continent will be under an orange warning on Saturday due to rough seas forecast, with waves of 5 to 6 meters expected in a northwesterly direction, IPMA said.

The areas of Porto, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga start with a yellow warning from 21:00 this Thursday until 6:00 on Saturday, before turning orange until 00:00 on Sunday.

These seven areas are then again under a yellow warning from 00:00 to 12:00 on Sunday, also due to the waves.

The IPMA has also issued a yellow warning for rough seas in the districts of Beja, Faro and Setúbal from 06:00 Saturday until 12:00 Sunday.

An orange warning is issued by IPMA whenever there is a “moderate to high risk meteorological situation” and a yellow warning when there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the meteorological situation.

The Navy and the National Maritime Authority (ANM) have warned the public and maritime community to be vigilant due to the forecast of strong waves that could reach 13 meters.

The two authorities said in a statement that the wind and sea forecast indicated worsening weather conditions and rough seas on the west coast of mainland Portugal until 00:00 on Sunday.

The Navy and Maritime Department are asking people to avoid walking near the sea, engage in recreational activities in areas prone to rough seas, and strengthen the mooring of moored vessels.

Sea conditions will be characterized by waves coming from the northwest, with significant heights that can reach seven meters and a maximum height of 13 meters, and average wind intensity that can reach 56 kilometers per hour (km/h). It is noted that gusts can reach 101 km/h.
