Ventura wants to “restore police authority” with guns “to be used when necessary.”

President Chegi this Friday proposed to “restore the authority” of the security forces, arguing that “weapons should be used when necessary.” Andre Ventura also once again promised to equalize the subsidies allocated to the judicial police.

The Chega leader spoke at a lunch/rally in Lamego, Viseu district, during which he took advantage of the location of the Special Operations Forces Center in that municipality to set the tone for his intervention.

Andre Ventura said that “the police have lost their authority and capacity.”

“Today we have police officers who are afraid to use weapons, afraid to intervene when they are involved in robberies, when they are trying to stop fights. We have police officers who are afraid to act because they know a person has been harmed in an attack. In the end there will be no criminal, but the police, with disciplinary proceedings, prosecution, etc.,” he added.

“I am fully committed to restoring the authority of the police. They need to walk the streets with their heads held high, not be afraid to take action, pursue criminals and, if necessary, use weapons, because weapons must be used when necessary. And in a rule of law state, the use of weapons should be used when it is necessary to prevent the commission of a crime,” he said, without, however, specifying how this would be carried out.

One of the measures in Chegi’s election program involves “revising the rules of the use of force and the use of firearms,” but does not explain in what sense.

“We need commitment to the police, military and firefighters in the next government. These men and women who wear the uniform to serve us deserve our commitment that absolutely no one will be left unempowered and without security clearances in the next Legislature,” the President said. Chegi in his speech to 130 people.

Andre Ventura clarified that this commitment will be “a commitment to dignity, a binding commitment that these sectors can never again be destroyed, abandoned, damaged and humiliated by the state, by successive governments.”

Arguing that if this was not done, the country risked “soon” being left without “an Armed Forces, without a Police Force and without a Fire Department,” Ventura argued that it was “a country that has been left without a dream, in healthy anarchy.” , where there is no law and no king.”

Stating that “in recent years the army and police have lost 23% of their purchasing power” and that “the career is unattractive”, President Chegi stressed that “Portugal cannot do without motivated, satisfied and worthy military, police and firefighters in your profession.”

Ventura accused the government of “treating these sectors the worst” because “it doesn’t like those who wear uniforms.”

“What they have done with the police this year is a very clear sign of the importance they place on them. This was done deliberately to humiliate them, to deprive them of their dignity, to insult a police force that they do not like,” he criticized.

And he once again promised to “equalize the allowance paid to the judicial police, all security forces and prison guards”, saying it was “a matter of fairness”.

“I cannot imagine a country where members of the professions holding positions are entitled to risk pay, but the police, firefighters and military are not. This is a country that says they are useless,” he said.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs noted that this measure will cost 154 million euros.
