The President of the SDP said this Saturday in response to the Secretary General of the PS that he wants to “value work” without “taking anything from anyone,” even compensating those who received social benefits and lost income when they started working.
“We want to value work. What is bad is not what people get because they are in a difficult situation, but what is bad is what people get as a result of their work,” Luis Montenegro said at a lunchtime rally of the Democratic Alliance (AD). ) in Trofa, in the Porto area.
“They don’t understand this, these are the foundations of a fair society, a strong society, a society that wants to grow,” he added.
The PSD president made it a point to respond to Socialist Party secretary general Pedro Nuno Santos, who on Friday invited him to clarify whether he wants to cut unemployment benefits, as he believes this principle “makes all the difference.” at stake” between them.
“When I say that those who work should not have a lower income than those who do not work, I do not mean those who receive unemployment benefits, for a simple reason: only those who receive unemployment benefits works. So we need to know how it works,” he began with the answer.
The SDP chairman went on to say that defending this principle “does not aim to take anything away from anyone,” including “those who are in difficult, vulnerable situations and receiving social benefits,” and highlighted the sentence that appears in the AD program, in its poorly publicized understanding, of creating a monetary bonus for solidarity.
Thanks to this measure, “if someone is on welfare at home and then goes into professional life,” they will be confident that they “won’t earn a penny less,” he said.
According to Luis Montenegro, the PSD/CDS-PP/PPM coalition thus defends “the principle of evaluating work, effort, merit and results.”
“And that is why we propose to exempt bonuses based on performance within one monthly salary from contributions and taxes. And this applies to both the private sector and the public sector,” he emphasized.
