“Adan’s injury is not serious. This is a muscle injury that can be treated and restored in no time. I think he will miss a few games,” Ruben Amorim said on Saturday about goalkeeper Leonin’s injury suffered during training.
The Sporting coach also noted the fact that the 36-year-old goalkeeper has just two games left before his contract is automatically renewed: “It doesn’t change anything because we plan to bring him back this season.”
Ruben Amorim rejected the possibility of Sporting using a substitute goalkeeper – a situation covered by regulations – and took the opportunity to praise Franco Israel, who remains in the starting line-up for Sunday’s match with Farense after the clash. Benfica in the first leg of the Portuguese Cup semi-final (2–1 triumph). “Every game he has played this season has shown a lot of maturity. I really liked his footwork against Benfica because he served his teammates very well. The goal he conceded had little chance. I see a goalkeeper with excellent playing qualities, a strong personality and ready to score,” he said. Amorim prefers Diogo Pinto as a backup goalkeeper.
As for Sunday’s match (18:00) with Farense, Amorim foresees difficulties and says he is not worried about the classic game between Porto and Benfica: “We just want our victory so that we can go to dinner in a relaxed condition. Then everything that should happen in the classics will happen. Our focus is only on Farens. We understand that if we win all the league matches, we will become champions.”
The return of Trincao and Paulinho, who have recovered from injury, is good news for Amorim: “Trincao said he was fine. He is very strong in resisting pain and will be summoned. Paulinho is back too.”
Who will start in this match is goalscorer Giokeres: “We have to win, so there is always an opportunity to play.”
