Two GNR soldiers, believed to be Sporting fans, were returning home to the Cantanhede area (Coimbra) early on Friday morning – after watching the Portuguese Cup derby (2-1 for the Lions) – when they were attacked. and beaten by alleged members of the Benfica fan base.
As confirmed CM An official GNR source said the attack took place at the Aveiras (Santarem) petrol station on the A1 motorway. The soldiers, who were off duty and traveling to Lisbon on their own time, were traveling in a van, which was attacked by the group as soon as it entered a service station.
The attacks included punches and kicks, as well as the use of extendable batons, weapons that are only allowed to members of the security forces and services, as well as citizens with a special license.
The vehicle was damaged and the soldiers were injured – one even cut his hand as he fell to escape the attack – but the official source would not confirm whether they were hospitalized.
Victims now have six months to file a complaint, which they have not yet done.
