The President of the Liberal Initiative (IL), Rui Rocha, defended this Sunday the creation of a national compensation circle to put an end to “wasted votes” and end the day of reflection.
“Yes, to the compensation circle, so that we can have more representation in Parliament and end the day of reflection,” concluded the Liberal leader at the end of a visit to the Beira Alta line in Viseu, closed due to modernization work, after the morning passed in Matosinhos, in area of Porto.
As an example, Rui Rocha cited that in Viseu, in the last legislative elections, every fifth vote was lost, meaning that 20% of the votes were not used to elect a deputy.
“We have the SDP and the PS who agree with the diagnosis: there is a problem of representation, but when it comes to this, three decades ago they never allowed this problem to be solved,” he stressed.
The creation of a compensation circle would be “a way to increase the participation of the Portuguese,” he stressed.
Regarding the electoral system, the IL President also defended the end of the day of reflection as it does not make sense and has become outdated over time.
Regarding early and mobile voting for the legislative elections on the 10th, thousands of Portuguese went to the polls this Sunday, which the Liberal leader considered “an excellent solution.”
“We must use all possible mechanisms to increase participation in elections,” he emphasized.
Regarding the decrease in the number of registrations compared to the last legislative elections, Rui Rocha devalued it, remembering that at that time there was a pandemic.
“This comparison is not entirely fair, we were living in exceptional times and so there were a lot of people who were signing up in advance because they didn’t want to miss the opportunity to vote if they ended up contracting Covid-19,” he said. argued.
The total number of voters who requested to vote today was 208,007, lower than the 2022 legislative elections (315,785 registered) but much higher than the 2019 legislative elections (56,291).
The so-called mobility vote allows voters to vote a week in advance in the municipality of their choice. If they don’t, they can do it on Election Day, which is the 10th.
More than 10.8 million Portuguese are called upon to vote in the selection of 230 deputies to the Assembly of the Republic.
18 political forces are competing in these elections – 15 parties and three coalitions.
