Associations representing officers, non-commissioned officers and soldiers of the armed forces sent a letter to the President of the Republic this Sunday asking the head of state and the next government to give “the attention that the military deserves.”
“The military professional associations demand from His Excellency the President of the Republic and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, as well as from the government formed as a result of the next legislative elections, the attention that the men and women who serve the Fatherland, subject to the members of the Portuguese Armed Forces”, – says a joint letter addressed to the head of the Military Chamber of the President of the Republic.
In this document, three associations, which at the end of February acknowledged the possibility of military protests in the streets if the next leader responds to the demands of the security forces but does not pay “special attention” to the Armed Forces, write that they maintain this intention, believing that respect for the law will be guaranteed.
The three associations recall that “they have always defended the rights of the military in several initiatives, the latest of which took place in November 2022 next to the official residence of the Prime Minister, in accordance with the law and constitutional principles.”
“The National NCOs Association, the Armed Forces Officers Association and the Soldiers Association want to see military rights protected and respected. And we will continue to follow this path until we see that these rights are secured. As we have stated, this Defense will take place through all forms of struggle permitted to us in accordance with the Law and the Constitution,” they guarantee in a letter addressed to the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.
The three associations also write that “information” they consider “unsubstantiated and taken out of context” has been released about their “widely held views and past, present and future actions.”
