PAN accuses Chega of irresponsibility due to suspicions of possible cancellation of votes

This Monday, the PAN representative accused Chegu of being irresponsible and adopting an electoral strategy identical to that of Donald Trump in the United States, after Andre Ventura raised the possibility of his party’s votes being annulled.

“We believe that it is irresponsible for Chega to be here proposing electoral mechanisms or electoral strategies like those we have seen in the United States to question the electoral act,” Ines Souza Real told reporters.

Speaking on the sidelines of a visit to the Onde Há Gato Não Há Rato association in Almada, the head of the PAN list in Lisbon recalled the “withdrawal from the polls” in the repeat of legislative elections in the European constituency in 2022.

That same year, voters again took part in elections to elect two MPs after 80% of the votes in European circle meetings were invalidated after valid votes were mixed with invalid votes that were not accompanied by a copy of identification.

“When the electoral act had to be repeated (…), there were more abstentions than we had. We must be responsible here to resolve this act. [eleitoral] pass successfully. (…) And trust in what was the role of observers – people who voluntarily come to polling stations and do their work in favor of democracy, and not us, who are suspicious,” emphasized Ines Souza Real.

“Creating noise during an election campaign is nothing more than an election strategy, as we have already seen in the example [Donald] Trump in the United States, and this clearly does not correspond to the sense of responsibility of the Portuguese who are part of the polling stations and whom we can only thank for their service to democracy,” he added.

On Sunday, President Chegi reiterated his suspicions that the party’s legislative votes may have been deliberately annulled and said the National Electoral Commission (CNE) should investigate.

“I hope that tonight the CNE, instead of saying that it gets nothing, that it hasn’t seen anything, that it doesn’t know anything, will look at this and say that it should open up a procedure on the viability of the people who are sitting at the table and on the electoral process in expatriate communities,” said Andre Ventura upon arriving at a dinner/rally in Leiria as part of the campaign for the March 10 legislative elections.

During the election campaign this Monday, Inés Sousa Real also de-dramatized the fact that the former deputy of the party elected by Setúbal, Cristina Rodríguez, left for Chega, but regretted that values such as gender equality were rejected.

“We feel sorry for these people that values were rejected, be it animal welfare, rights, gender equality and others,” he said.

“People should be in a group in which they identify themselves. For PAN, this is our candidacy. And here at the top of Setúbal’s list is Alexandra Reis Moreira, a person who comes from the animal world, who is a lawyer, who also gives her time and volunteers to the community, and therefore we know that there are values that cannot be abandoned,” he emphasized.

Former PAN MP Cristina Rodriguez is number three in Chega no Porto.

Cristina Rodríguez was elected as PAN MP in 2019 for the Setúbal constituency, becoming an independent MP in that legislature, and in the current legislature she was a councilor for Chegi.

More than 10.8 million Portuguese are called to vote on Sunday to elect 230 members of the Assembly of the Republic.

18 political forces, 15 parties and three coalitions are competing in these elections.
