The President of the European Socialist Party (PES) said this Wednesday that outgoing Prime Minister António Costa has been an “inspiration” for all socialists over the past eight years, both in Portugal and in the European Union (EU).
“Let me say a few words to Antonio Costa. This is your last PES congress as Prime Minister of Portugal, a function that you have carried out with responsibility and success both in Portugal and in the EU,” said Stefan Löfven at the start of the PES. The Congress in Rome (Italy) elected Nicolas Schmit as a candidate for the post of President of the European Commission.
“For us, for all democrats, you will always be a source of inspiration,” the former Swedish prime minister added, adding “thank you, Antonio” in Portuguese.
Socialist delegates and representatives applauded António Costa, who sat next to his Spanish counterpart Pedro Sánchez.
“I am sure that our paths will cross again in our battles,” added Stefan Löfven.
The PES president also criticized what he said was the failure of the European People’s Party (EPP) to establish “red lines” with the far right.
“It’s common to say that elections are always the most important, but this is the most important in the last 40 years. […]. A few months ago here in Rome, far-right protesters proudly gave the fascist salute. It is shameful that the Prime Minister failed to condemn this fascist rally. Let me be clear: we will never cooperate with European conservatives and reformists, with Vox [Espanha]AfD [Alternativa para a Alemanha] or any extremists,” he added.
