Rui Rocha wants to “reconcile young people with Portugal” with higher wages and lower taxes.

The IL president said this Wednesday that he wants to “reconcile young people with Portugal”, committing to raise wages and lower taxes so that they stay in the country and “do not flee” abroad.

In the final stage of campaigning for Sunday’s legislative elections, Rui Rocha addressed young people, saying he wanted them to stay in Portugal and not leave “an empty seat at the table” in their family homes.

After attending the education, training, youth and employment fair Qualifica 24 in Matosinhos, Porto district, to which he dedicates the day this Wednesday, the Liberal leader insisted on the need to reconcile the country with youth, given that is what is at stake on Sunday.

When approached and approached by young people at the event, most of whom were still undecided about their choice of vocational or university course, Rui Rocha said it was unacceptable that half of the university’s students were accepting or considering leaving university. a country.

The IL president also called it unacceptable that Portugal is not responding to youth and that it is “urgently necessary to create conditions” for them to stay in the country and become an asset to its growth.

“This is no longer just a matter of young people, young people will take a stand in the next elections, it is a matter of other generations. We, as parents and grandparents, have a moral obligation to build a country in which young people can and want to stay,” he stressed.

Among the “many things that are not working well in Portugal,” one of the things that needs to improve is higher education, Rui Rocha said.

On this issue, the Liberal leader said there was a “serious problem” that the country could not retain skilled young people without providing them with facilities after investing in their training.

IL’s priority is to provide them with conditions, opportunities, higher salaries and lower taxes, he said.

Thanks to this formula, the economy grows and young Portuguese can stay in Portugal, he emphasized.

“We want a country that will make life easier for young people,” the liberal leader emphasized.

Answering a question about the current education model, the IL president emphasized that the party does not put forward any proposals to change the current model, since it makes no sense to increase the cost of education for young people who are “already punished enough for lack of opportunity.”

IL’s vision is based on changing the rules of how higher education institutions operate with greater success, greater merit, and more student engagement.

“The operating rules are currently unbalanced due to the success of higher education institutions,” he concluded.

More than 10.8 million Portuguese are called to vote on March 10 to elect 230 members of the Assembly of the Republic.

18 political forces, 15 parties and three coalitions are competing in these elections.
