Angolan President João Lourenço has taken a further step in eliminating fuel subsidies by eliminating benefits granted to some professional classes as of April 30, according to a decree published in the Diário da República.
The Angolan government announced on June 1 last year the phasing out of fuel subsidies, which started with gasoline but excluded some economic activities.
These include family agro-pastoral activities, artisanal fisheries, taxi drivers and motorcycle taxis, through delivery cards with a daily limit of 7,000 kwanzas (eight euros) to cover the difference between the 160 kwanzas (0.17 euros) per liter it costs. gasoline and the current 300 kwanzas (0.33 euros).
According to a presidential decree published this Thursday, the cap on gasoline subsidy cards will be lifted by April 30.
The diploma justifies the removal of this mitigation measure as “the need to protect the objectives and impacts of fuel price reform, prevent distortions in pricing, and ensure the sustainability of public finances.”
In 2022, the fuel subsidy amounted to approximately 1.98 billion kwanzas (2.17 billion euros).
