PCP general secretary Paulo Raimundo suggested on Sunday that the CDU’s result in legislative elections represented a “negative development” as the reduction of its parliamentary representation had ended and the percentage was below the 2022 results.
“The result of the CDU, with a reduction in its parliamentary representation and a percentage lower than what we achieved two years ago, means a negative development, but nevertheless it represents an important expression of resistance, having all the more value and significance when its creation had to be faced with with a long-term environment characterized by hostility and humiliation,” he said.
Paulo Raimundo was the first party leader to speak out about the elections at a time when the results were not yet fully determined, and denounced the context surrounding the CDU in the pre-election period, citing the “long-term falsification of the PKP’s positions.” , to feed anti-communist prejudices and narrow their room for growth.”
He also pointed to the “advancement of reactionary forces and a fabricated dispute between two candidates for the post of prime minister” as the reasons behind the voters’ choice, during a speech held at a hotel near the headquarters of the PCP in Lisbon, where he welcomed about 200 thousand voters who cast their votes for the CDU and pledged their commitment to opposing right-wing policies and fighting reactionary projects.
The communist leader began speaking shortly after 23:00, while the Democratic Alliance (AD, uniting PSD, SDS and PPM) led the tally, considering the situation “a negative factor for responding and solving problems.” population and anticipating “the path of regression and attack on the rights and favor of big capital.”
Paulo Raimundo also argued that the AD’s outcome is “inseparable from the PS’s governance options,” linking the issue to Chega’s rise: “The promotion of right-wing policies that generated injustice and legitimate grievances in the face of accumulating difficulties. , preferred demagogic speech, namely Chega.”
Given that communists have been “minorized and caricatured” over the past few months and the PKP has been the target of a “brutal offensive”, the CDU leader warned that those who expected to disappear from parliament were mistaken and that there is still a “long way to go” closing the door when turning left.
“The votes are counted, the final results are determined and the elected deputies are visible. Then at the end we’ll talk right away. The deputies that the CDU elected and the votes that it had will serve as the first line of fight from the right,” he emphasized.
The PKP general secretary also denied the direct transfer of votes from the CDU to Chege, noting that “there is no possibility” of such a scenario, and left a warning to voters who voted for Andre Ventura’s party.
“Thousands and thousands of people were drawn into voting, thinking that it would bring some solution to their lives, and they found that no solution would come of it. Some will return, others will leave this vote.” I have no doubt about this. Now we have watched this film. There are some people who voted thinking about solving their problems, and who give their votes to forces that will not solve a single problem for them, on the contrary. They will aggravate all the problems, and this is the task that faces us,” he concluded.
With more than 99% of the results recorded in this Sunday’s legislative elections, the HDZ wins 3.3% of the votes, securing so far the election of three members of the Assembly of the Republic: Paulo Raimundo (Lisbon), Paula Santos (Setúbal) and Alfredo Maia ( “Porto”)
