The President of the Chamber Vendas Novas, the socialist Luis Dias, resigned this Monday from his position after being elected as a deputy on the PS list for the Évora district in Sunday’s legislative elections, he said.
In a conversation with Lusa, Luis Dias said that this morning he resigned as president of the municipality of Alentejo, emphasizing that in doing so he fulfilled the “obligations given to the population” of the municipality of Vendas Novas.
“I have announced that for purposes of automatic application, [o mandato] will be removed, but I would never in my life upstage Vendas Novas and that is why, having been elected this morning, I have resigned from my mandate,” he said.
According to the President of the District Federation of PS Évora, the resignation from the post of President of the Chamber of Vendas Novas was carried out through a letter addressed to the municipality and its elected representatives.
Thanks to this resignation, on the side of the majority of the PS, Valentino Salgado Cunha, who replaced Luis Dias in the leadership of the municipality, effectively becomes president and Susana Gonçalves becomes a permanent councilor.
In his statements to Luse, the now elected PS deputy emphasized that the Socialist list in the Évora district achieved one of two goals in these legislative elections.
“The PS continues to be a party that deserves the trust of the majority of Alentejo residents,” he stressed, noting that the party “won in 14 municipalities and in most parishes” and achieved “a difference of almost 10 thousand votes.” for the second batch and the result is more than 30%.”
However, as Luis Diaz admitted, one of the goals of the Socialists of Évora – the re-election of two deputies from this Alentejo circle – was not achieved.
“We have to admit that with humility” because “some things may not have gone so well and there is still work to be done,” he admitted.
Regarding the low level of abstention compared to previous elections, the president of the Socialist Federation was also proud of the “historic participation in the constituency”, which had 67.01% of voters.
“This has not happened for many years and this is the dominant and positive note, regardless of the reason why each person came to vote,” he added.
The PS, although it lost more than 5,000 votes in the 2022 elections, won this circle in Sunday’s legislative elections with 32.79% (29,309 votes), electing Luis Dias.
The other two deputies in this circle were elected by the Democratic Alliance (AD), uniting SDP, SDS-NP and PPM, which received 22.43% (20,049 votes), and Chegoy – 19.96% (17,846).
Sonia Ramos, who already led the PSD candidacy for Évora in 2022, was re-elected and is now on the AD list, while Chega elected Rui Cristina, who in January left the PSD, from which he was elected deputy for Faro. .
At the national level, the AD won Sunday’s legislative elections with 29.49% of the vote and 79 deputies, compared to the 28.66% and 77 deputies achieved by the PS, although four emigration seats remain to be distributed.
