The government has approved the admission of 300 new agents to the PSP, which will “allow the subsequent appointment” of three hundred specialists from this unit to the municipal police of Lisbon and Porto, the Ministry of Internal Administration announced today.
In a note published today, a day after legislative elections that brought victory to the Democratic Alliance coalition to form a new government, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) added that “a contingent of 300 police officers is part of strengthening proximity policing and transparency in coordination between the state and local authorities.”
He also states that the opening of these new vacancies “also contributes to the process of rejuvenation of personnel” in the PSP.
In a note released today, MAI states that “the authorization increases the number of PSP enrollments to 800 in 2023 and 2024.”
The opening for the training of 300 new agents was authorized by the Ministries of Internal Administration and Finance and “continues the process of accepting 500 agents approved in 2023.”
On March 1, PSP announced that approximately 2,800 young people were vying to be accepted as new agents, a number that is decreasing every year.
From February 6 to 27, the PSP held a competition to create a personnel reserve for admission to agent training courses aimed at entering an agent career.
In a response then sent to Lusa, PSP national management stated that there were 2,865 candidates applying for the agent course, 178 fewer than last year’s 3,043, 640 fewer than 2022’s 3,505, 2 less, 709 more. than in 2021 (5574) and 321 less than in 2020 (3186).
Other data to which Lusa had access shows that there are fewer and fewer candidates to become PSP agents: in the 1990s there were more than 16 thousand candidates, and in 2012 there were more than ten thousand, now less than three thousand.
