Iceland’s volcano erupted for the fourth time since December this Saturday, sending smoke and lava into the air, according to the country’s meteorological office. Reuters.
The length of the fissure is estimated to be about 2.9 kilometers, roughly the same size as the last eruption in February, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said in a statement.
According to the same source, authorities have been warning for weeks that an eruption is imminent on the Reykjanes Peninsula, south of the Icelandic capital Reykjavik.
Rikke Pedersen, director of the Nordic Volcanology Centre, said this was “definitely expected”.
The eruption site is located between Hagafell and Stora Skogfell, in the same area as the previous eruption on February 8th.
The lava appeared to be flowing quickly south toward the nearby fishing town of Grindavik, where some of the roughly 4,000 residents had returned after other eruptions, the source said.
