One person was killed in a Ukrainian drone attack on an oil refinery in southern Russia.

A new Ukrainian drone attack this morning led to a fire at an oil refinery in southern Russia and the death of one person, military authorities in the Krasnodar region said.

“The fire at the Slavyansk oil refinery complex has now been completely extinguished,” the Krasnodar military headquarters reported.

“According to preliminary information, one person died during the drone attack, the probable cause of death was a heart attack,” the authorities added in the Telegram messenger.

The Slavyansk Refinery is located in the Krasnodar region, east of the Sea of Azov.

Several Russian regions, namely Belgorod and Kursk, located on the border with Ukraine, have been the target of numerous Ukrainian drone attacks this week targeting energy infrastructure.

On Saturday in Samara, about a thousand kilometers from the border with Ukraine, an oil refinery was set on fire in a drone attack.

An oil refinery was also the target of a drone attack on Wednesday in Ryazan, about 200 kilometers southeast of the capital Moscow, resulting in injuries.

On Tuesday, another refinery in the Nizhny Novgorod region, 800 kilometers from the border with Ukraine, was attacked, and a fire broke out at a fuel complex in the Oryol region, about 160 kilometers from the border.

In an interview published Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin accused Ukraine of attacking Russian soil in an attempt to interfere in the presidential election, for which voting ends this Sunday.

“All this is happening against the backdrop of failures [ucranianas] on the front line,” he concluded.

“However, the main goal, I have no doubt, if they fail to disrupt the presidential elections in Russia, is to at least try to somehow prevent citizens from expressing their will,” the Russian leader assured.

The election is expected to keep Putin in power until 2030, when he turns 77, with the possibility of an extension until 2036 thanks to constitutional changes introduced in 2020 that allow the leader to remain in power forever.
