A prison guard at the Coimbra prison was attacked this Monday with blows to the head by a prisoner described as violent, while the guard was admitted to the city hospital awaiting tests, a union source told Lusa.
According to the leader of the National Union of Prison Guards (SNCGP), Frederico Morais, the guard was punched in the head and was admitted to the Coimbra Hospital and University Center for medical examination.
The union leader also said that the prisoner who attacked the guard has already been placed “in isolation.”
Lusa has contacted the Directorate General of Reintegration and Prison Services (DGRSP) regarding the incident and is awaiting a response.
Another prison source heard by Lusa said the prison guard had several bruises and marks on his face from the attacks, which reportedly occurred around 3 p.m.
The assailant is 35 years old, serving a sentence for crimes of injury to physical integrity, domestic violence and others, and is described as violent, while Frederico Morais mentioned that he had already been transferred to the maximum security Monsanto prison once. , after attacks also on prison guards.
According to Frederico Morais, the blows were not specifically aimed at the attacking guard, since at that moment “one or another person could have been attacked,” being only the one who was on duty when the prisoner exhibited aggressive behavior.
A prison source interviewed by Lusa said the same inmate had been involved “in an altercation with another of his comrades” that morning.
For the union leader, the case is the latest of 11 reported since January this year and another that highlights the “lack of security in prisons”, especially in relation to “unjustified attacks” on prison guards, so the union is demanding “more serious action be taken and namely, to amend the Code of Criminal Procedure” to protect prison guards who “represent the Portuguese state.”
Frederico Morais also said that if nothing is done, the situation could become “more serious.”
