PS assures that “the red line against Chega has not moved a millimeter”

The PS parliamentary leader assured this Monday that the party’s “red line” on Chega “has not moved a millimeter”, denying that the government’s presence at the Santarém convention is a normalization of this political force.

“This is not PS normalizes [o Chega] or the government, and even more so the parliamentary group of the PS” (…), which made agreements with Chega in the Azores, which tried to make possible the election of a vice-president to the Assembly of the Republic, was the SDP. “Don’t be confused: the red line we set against Chega has not moved a millimeter,” Dias assured Eurico Brillante on the sidelines of a visit to the Serralves Foundation in Porto.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Group of the PS commented on the presence of the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Ana Katharina Mendez, at the closing of the 5th National Congress in Chega, in which the leaders of eight European extreme right parties intervened before the finale. speech by Andre Ventura, who was re-elected on Saturday as chairman of the party with 98.3% of the vote.

“Nothing to Chega. Why only opposition. This is a racist, xenophobic, misogynistic discourse that pits the Portuguese against the Portuguese. the Portuguese against the Portuguese and destroys democracy,” said Eurico Brillante Dias, speaking to reporters today.

Faced with criticism from socialist and former presidential candidate Ana Gomes, who said on Sunday that “the PS is following a perverted logic of the normalization of Chega,” Brillante Dias justified the presence of the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs at the Fifth Congress in Chega as fulfilling institutional duties.

“The government has an institutional responsibility to the party with parliamentary representation and opposition rights, and that is why the government was there. And the minister, I think it is impossible to be clearer than she was. It is clear that it was a hate speech and absolutely distanced himself from any interference” , – he said.

Eurico Brillante Díaz stated that “whenever the government is invited and the institutional representation of parties with seats in parliament is at stake, the government is gone.”

“Of course, the minister made great sacrifices,” he added, without specifying, however, whether the government had already been invited to other major Chega meetings.

On Sunday, the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs deplored the “hate speech” that she said marked the closing of the V Chega convention in Santarém, stressing that “there is a whole world that separates” the party from the government.

Justifying her presence with an official invitation, Ana Catarina Méndez emphasized “the total distance and lack of common ground between the government and Chega’s party”.

Accompanied by the Vice-Presidents and Socialist MPs elected by the District of Porto, Eurico Brillante Diaz today visited companies, associations and institutions in the fields of technological innovation, learning and culture.
