The PS National Political Commission meets this Thursday to analyze the political situation, while the Socialist General Secretary has suggested that the party wants to create a strong but responsible opposition by proposing to make AD’s adjustment budget viable.
The meeting is scheduled for 21:00 at the PS national headquarters in Largo do Rato in Lisbon and comes as the PS meets with its national authorities this week.
The party’s National Secretariat met in Viseu on Monday, and a meeting of the PS National Commission, the party’s highest deliberative body between congresses, is scheduled for Saturday in Viseu.
After the night of the elections, March 10, the Secretary General of the PS made statements to journalists only on Tuesday, after an audience with the President of the Republic at the Belém Palace.
On this occasion, Pedro Nuno Santos emphasized that, given that the PS did not have a majority and was not expected to win the elections after the election results were counted in emigration circles, the party had to “lead the opposition.”
Stressing that the party will be a “stable, strong and united opposition,” the socialist leader stressed that this does not mean that it will not bear responsibility and, despite opposition initiatives with which it does not agree, it does not refuse mutual understanding “on issues , where there are common points.”
From the outset, Pedro Nuno Santos expressed his willingness to contribute to the adjustment of the AD budget, which aims to increase the salary scales of teachers, security forces, health workers and judicial officials by the beginning of the summer. He also agreed to take part in the decision on the future location of Lisbon airport.
Despite this, he maintained the position he had already expressed during the election campaign that it was “virtually impossible” for the PS to make the AD state budget viable, stressing that the programs were too different and that this would harm democracy.
