Antonio Costa and Luis Montenegro met in Brussels

The outgoing Prime Minister António Costa met this Thursday in Brussels with the Prime Minister-designate Luís Montenegro to congratulate him, ahead of the meetings of the respective political groups to which they belong.

Antonio Costa and the PSD president met at a hotel near the European Commission, from where they will then travel to meetings of the European Socialist Party and the European People’s Party respectively, which usually precede summits of European leaders.

“It wasn’t agreed upon, but it came together,” Antonio Costa said of the meeting to journalists present outside the hotel.

Both Costa and Montenegro smiled, and the socialist invited the social democrat for coffee at the hotel, and television cameras even went to the restaurant where they sat at the same table, but the meeting continued after that without the presence of representatives of social networks. .

The meeting was short, lasting less than ten minutes. At the end, Social Democratic vice-president and MEP Paulo Rangel congratulated António Costa, and the outgoing prime minister joked: “I see you’re wearing pink, that’s a good sign, you’re becoming a real diplomat.”

Costa’s comment is a hint at the possibility that Paulo Rangel will take over the foreign affairs portfolio in the future government led by Luis Montenegro, whose composition will be presented to the President of the Republic on the 28th and whose name has not yet been confirmed.

The outgoing prime minister met early in the morning with North Atlantic Treaty Organization Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the political-military organization’s headquarters, while Luis Montenegro met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The Democratic Alliance (AD) won the elections on March 10, and the leader of the SDP was appointed prime minister by the president of the republic. Luis Montenegro will present his government on March 28, with the inauguration scheduled for April 2.

The two coalitions led by the PSD – AD (PSD/CDS/PPM) and Madeira Primeiro (PSD/CDS) – received 28.84% of the votes and 80 deputies, according to preliminary results from the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Internal Administration. Election administration.

The PS was the second party in terms of votes with 28% and 78 deputies, while Chega received 18.07% and 50 seats in the new parliament.

The Liberal Initiative (LI) became the fourth political force with 4.94% of the votes and eight deputies, followed by the Left Bloc with 4.36% and five deputies. The PCP also elected deputies with 3.17% and four deputies, as did Livre, with 3.16%. The People-Animals-Nature Party (PAN) retained its MP with 1.95%.
