Current PSD/Madeira leader Miguel Albuquerque won the internal elections, defeating his opponent Manuel Antonio Correia with 2,246 votes to 1,854 among 4,388 registered voters, the party secretariat said.
The election event took place today after the political crisis caused by the dismissal of Miguel Albuquerque as president of the regional government (PSD/CDU-PP) in January after he was named as a defendant in a judicial investigation on suspicion of corruption in the archipelago.
The internal elections took place from 17:30 to 20:30 in the municipal and parish headquarters of the PSD, located in 11 municipalities of the Autonomous Region of Madeira. 4,388 activists were able to vote, more than 12,000 in total.
