The Bloc de Esquerda and Livre met this Friday in another meeting of the left, organized by Mariana Mortagua, coordinator of the bloc.
At the end of the meeting, Mariana Mortagua emphasized the relevance of “maintaining dialogue outside the Assembly of the Republic” with left-wing parties and mentioned plans to hold a demonstration on April 25 against the “turn to the right” in Portugal. “The country will take to the streets to show that there is hope,” he stressed.
Faced with a new configuration of government and parliament, the bloc’s coordinator called for the mobilization of leftist forces. “The feminist, LGBT and climate movements express an alternative,” he emphasized.
The meeting with Livre co-president Ruy Tavares made it possible to highlight “similar positions” on various issues and the negative aspects of the absolute socialist majority, namely “refusal of investment in public schools.”
According to Rui Tavares, “it will be very important to coordinate parliamentary work to guarantee the complementarity of programs” between the left. “The country needs ideas of social justice. We want to bring Free Personality to the left,” he explained.
Regarding the results of the legislative elections, Co-Speaker Livra chose to highlight the growth of the party and criticized the media attention to Chege. “Livre’s experience shows that the left manages to grow as well as the right. Livre also quadrupled the number of deputies and the far right received 10 times more media attention,” he said.
Despite the dialogue, “if the left grows only by redistributing votes among the left, it will remain the same,” he said.
