PS Azores advocates for the urgent creation of income support for displaced students

The parliamentary group PS Açores is advocating for the urgent creation of support mechanisms for young displaced Azorean students, such as assistance with housing rent, questioning the Azores executive on this matter, as announced this Sunday.

According to a press release from the party, the parliamentary group PS Açores submitted a request to the Legislative Assembly of the region, in which the Socialists recall that the Parliament of the Azores almost three years ago, in June 2021, unanimously approved a draft resolution aimed at creating support for displaced Azorean students, but yet to be implemented.

“Almost three years later, we see that this SDS/SDS/NPM regional government is not even implementing the recommendations of its constituent parties, since the draft resolution in question came from the SDS-PP. Of the two, one: either the government does not respect the recommendations of the coalition parties themselves, or this draft resolution and its approval by the right-wing parties was nothing more than sand in the eyes of the displaced Azorean students,” lamented MP Russell Souza, quoted in a press note.

The Socialist MP who first signed the request stresses the importance of the issue for students moving between islands and those studying on the mainland.

“This is a pressing issue that has most recently sparked a national demonstration by students who are experiencing many difficulties in finding and paying for decent housing while studying,” said Russell Souza, who is also the leader of the Socialist Youth (JS) of the Azores.

On National Student Day, the Azorean Socialist MP recalls that PS Açores advocates “the creation of emergency support for Azorean families who have pushed students out of higher or vocational institutions” to help them “cope with the increased costs that they have had to bear.” with housing.”

In his opinion, the Azorean leader (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) intends to “whistle to the side and push forward with his stomach, as if he has no responsibilities or skills that could contribute to the qualifications of young Azoreans.”

In the submitted request, the parliamentary group PS Açores wants to know “when the regional government of the Azores intends to create an Office for the support of Azorean students living in the Azores and pursuing higher education.”

“When will the regional government create a mechanism to support the payment of housing rents to displaced Azorean students?” asks Russell Souza, given that what is at stake are “simple questions” that “deserve quick and direct answers” from the Azores executive.
