Eight deaths and more than 2 thousand accidents during the “2 wheels: hold on to life” campaign.

As part of the “2 wheels: hold on to life” campaign, security forces have recorded more than two thousand road accidents over the past six days, resulting in the death of eight people, which is three more than in the same period in 2023.

A joint statement from the National Republican Guard (GNR), the Public Security Police (PSP) and the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR) indicated that from Tuesday to Sunday, 2,034 road accidents were reported, resulting in eight deaths and 35 serious injuries. injured and 573 people died. minor injuries

Compared to the same period in 2023, there were 67 fewer accidents, three more fatalities, seven fewer serious injuries and three more minor injuries.

The eight dead, all men, ranged in age from 23 to 67. The accidents occurred in the districts of Braga, Porto, Leiria, Santarem, Lisbon and Beja.

During this campaign period, from Friday to Sunday, the Moto GP Portugal event took place at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão, with GNR predicting a significant increase in motorcycle traffic on the main access roads to the Algarve. .

The aim of the campaign was to sensitize drivers, especially those with two-wheel drive vehicles, to drive safely, follow traffic rules and avoid risky behavior such as drunk driving, speeding and improper use of safety devices.

The campaign included the participation of the regional administrations of the Azores and Madeira in awareness-raising activities.

Security forces’ operations included speed radar checks on 3.4 million vehicles, 3.3 million of which were monitored by SINCRO, the National Speed ​​Enforcement System under the responsibility of ANSR.

Security forces inspected 52.1 thousand cars.

Of the total number of 3.4 million vehicles inspected during the campaign, 18.8 thousand violations were recorded.

This was the third of 12 information and inspection campaigns planned under the National Inspection Plan for 2024.

By the end of the year, nine more campaigns will be carried out, one per month, with awareness-raising and inspection activities.

Of the three events held this year, 11 events were held, during which more than 1,100 people were personally raised.

As for verification activities, the number of drivers checked personally amounted to 152.2 thousand, and about 8.5 million vehicles were checked using radar.
