On Monday, Spanish courts suspended the blocking of the social network Telegram, which was decided last week, pending the findings of the police report, according to a court ruling this Monday.
Judge Santiago Pedras, the same one who decided to prevent the blocking of the social network last Friday, signed a new order this Monday asking the police to submit a report on “the Telegram platform (characteristics, etc.), as well as on cases that could force users to temporarily suspend the service.
The decision to block Telegram has been suspended pending this report, according to the same order this Monday.
On Friday evening, a judge decided to temporarily suspend Telegram in Spain and ruled that telecom operators will have three hours to block the social network after receiving notice from the court.
The operators were not notified of the court’s decision and this Monday the judge of the Spanish National Auditorium suspended his own decision.
The decision regarding Telegram came after complaints from Mediaset, Atena 3 and Movistar, Spanish producers and distributors of audiovisual content.
Three companies accused Telegram of unauthorized posting of copyrighted content.
The judge’s decision to suspend Telegram has been criticized over the past two days by various sectors in Spain, from the Council of IT Engineers to consumer protection associations and political parties, which considered it an act of censorship.
Telegram is a cloud-based instant messaging service currently based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, which has over 700 million monthly active users, according to the company.
Judge Santiago Peraza’s order Friday ordered Telegram to be suspended in Spain as a precaution while an investigation launched after complaints were filed against the social network continued.
According to the same order, until now the company that owns Telegram has refused to provide information requested by the Spanish courts as part of this investigation.
