António Costa began the press conference by thanking the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebel de Sousa, for his presence. “This is more than a courtesy gesture intended to highlight the importance of cooperation and institutional solidarity between the government and other sovereign bodies. I want to thank these eight years of cooperation and institutional solidarity.”
“It is unlikely that there will be another period in which the relationship between the government and the president has continued in such a flexible, collaborative and supportive manner,” he concluded.
The outgoing prime minister also said that a total of three “essential” diplomas had been approved: two on public administration, as well as a proposed law to stimulate capital markets.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also began his speech by thanking António Costa for his eight years in government. The President of the Republic added that Portugal has a very complex balancing system.
“This is not an easy system. It requires institutional solidarity,” he said. Speaking about the pandemic sweeping the country, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said it was handed over as a sign of “national solidarity.”
“Every day problems arise that require dialogue between the Party of Regions and the Prime Minister,” he assured.
“As President of the Republic, I thank those who served this government. The world does not end today, life does not end today. There is no reason why we cannot meet at other crossroads in the service of Portugal,” said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, speaking about Antonio Costa.
The work of the 16th legislative body will officially begin this week: 230 deputies elected in the legislative elections on March 10 will take office. The first plenary meeting will take place on Tuesday, during which a new president of the Assembly of the Republic will be elected.
On March 28, Luis Montenegro will present his government and take office on April 2.
