BE and PCP agree to stop constitutional revision and ask for recognition of Palestine

The BOE and PKP agreed on Monday to try to stop the constitutional review process and demand recognition of the State of Palestine after a meeting in which they pledged to keep the “door open for dialogue” with the right-wing opposition.

The leaders of BE and PCP met this Monday for about an hour at the national headquarters of the PCP in Lisbon, as part of a round of meetings requested by blocs from leftist parties and environmentalists to discuss convergences in the right-wing opposition.

At the end of the meeting, BE coordinator Mariana Mortagua announced that both sides had reached an agreement “so that the process of constitutional revision can be stopped and finally closed.”

“There is no point in maintaining this process of constitutional review in this scenario with a majority of MPs on the right, nothing good will come from the process of constitutional review in these conditions,” he said, expressing the desire that this understanding “could be extended to all opposition parties.”

The BE leader also stressed that the meeting, which she stressed was her first with Paulo Raimundo as PCP secretary general, also saw “huge agreement on the issue of Palestine.”

“We want it to be [uma questão] central, given the massacre and genocide, and the need to reaffirm self-determination and recognition of the State of Palestine, which has not yet been done in Portugal by the Portuguese state,” he said.

Beyond these two issues, Mariana Mortagua stressed that both parties agreed on the need to reject the right-wing program and create a “strong opposition” to the AD government. However, he did not commit to approving the motion to reject announced by the PCP, emphasizing that BE reserves its judgment after reading the document.

The BE leader also said the two parties share “common diagnoses” and agree on “very important” issues ranging from labor rights and labor to housing, committing to maintaining “open bridges of dialogue and the capacity for dialogue to face these times.” which lie in front.”

“And also carry out a large mobilization on April 25 and May 1. These will be the first moments of popular mobilization and reaction to the election results, as well as to the right-wing government,” he emphasized.

In turn, PCP leader Paulo Raimundo said that during the meeting his party agreed with BE “in terms of analyzing the results”, and that we are now faced with a “very difficult situation”, partly provoked by the PS government, and to which the right leader will not respond.

“All the problems that existed on March 9 are here: the wage problem, reforms, housing, the National Health Service, the response to parents’ and children’s rights. All this was and is in order to react, and not for that. We are under no illusion that this Answer will not come from the PSD/CDS government,” he said.

According to the general secretary of the PKP, from this leader “only more dismantling of public services will come, more attacks on the democratic regime, on wages, regardless of this or that specific measure that we can now evade.”

“We said that on our part, the workers, the people, everyone can count on being on the front line of the fight against these policies and goals and will use all the means and tools that are at our disposal, whether at the institutional level or outside institutions,” he said, promising protests in the streets.
