The suicide attack was originally claimed by Sarbakaf Mohmand, commander of the Pakistani Taliban, in a post posted on Twitter.
Hours later, however, Mohammad Khurasani, a spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban, known as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP, denied responsibility for the group, saying the movement’s policy was not to attack mosques, seminaries and religious sites.
In a statement, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif condemned the attack and ordered the authorities to provide the best possible treatment to the victims, promising “harsh measures” against those responsible for the attack.
Peshawar has been the scene of frequent attacks by terrorist militias.
The TTP, which has been operating in Pakistan for over 15 years, is a separate group from the Taliban, who currently control Afghanistan.
