Housing, a thousand euro minimum wage and recognition of Palestine among PCP priorities

On Tuesday, the PKP presented the first initiatives of the new legislature, such as raising the national minimum wage to one thousand euros this year, measures aimed at combating the housing crisis and recognition of the State of Palestine.

These measures were presented by the leader of the communist parliament, Paula Santos, at a press conference in the Assembly of the Republic on the first day of the 16th legislative assembly.

The leader began by mentioning that by the start of the new legislature, “the problems in the lives of workers, pensioners and youth had not disappeared,” arguing that the future PSD-CDS government would not solve them.

“The PCP takes the initiative, confident that, despite the obstacles arising from the composition of the Assembly of the Republic, workers and people have enough strength to defend rights in their struggle, to demand and receive answers,” said Paula Santos. .

Among the first initiatives that have already entered the parliament’s service are an increase in the national minimum wage to one thousand euros this year and an extraordinary increase in pensions from January 2024, “to increase by at least 7.5%.” more than 70 euros per pensioner.”

The PKP insists on one of its main slogans – making changes to labor laws, moving towards the abolition of the expiration date of collective bargaining and the restoration of the principle of more favorable treatment of workers.

In the housing sector, the Communists propose creating a special regime for the protection of tenants, “either limiting the renewal of rent values for new contracts to 0.43, or limiting evictions due to proven economic insufficiency, or canceling the designated “against evictions” and in favor of restoring a special eviction procedure through the court.”

Regarding housing credit, the communists advocate the creation of a special home ownership regime, “which puts bank interest on rising interest rates,” as well as “setting the maximum installment limit at 35% of monthly household income,” among other measures. .

At the international level, the PKP Parliamentary Group has submitted a draft resolution, which does not have the force of law, recommending that the next government recognize the State of Palestine within its pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. as defined by resolutions adopted by the United Nations.

Paula Santos criticized the previous socialist majority for not accepting this decision and stressed that Portugal does not need to wait for EU membership, arguing that countries such as Spain, Malta, Slovenia and Ireland have already expressed their willingness to recognize the State of Palestine.

In the health sector, the Communists are pushing ahead with a regime of exceptional dedication in the National Health Service (NHS) on an optional basis with a 50% increase in basic pay and half a point for each year of assessment for progress purposes.

Other initiatives include complete replacement of teachers’ working hours and provision of travel for all security forces and agencies.

In the legislative elections on the 10th, the PKP elected four deputies, receiving 205,436 votes, two fewer parliamentarians than in the previous legislature.
