Hugo Soares says allowing Chegi’s ‘vice’ is respecting the Constitution

PSD general secretary and parliamentary leadership candidate Hugo Soares said on Tuesday that the viability of the vice-presidential candidates of the four largest parties, including Chegu, “is in accordance with the Constitution.”

Hugo Soares also told reporters that the PSD will propose Teresa Morais for the post of first vice-president of parliament, in addition to its candidate for the presidency of the Assembly of the Republic, former Defense Minister José Pedro Aguiar-Branco.

At the end of the meeting of the PSD parliamentary group, at which he confirmed to the deputies his candidacy for the post of President of the Chamber, Hugo Soares was questioned by journalists about the information conveyed on Monday by the leader of Chegi that there would be mutual feasibility of the proposals of the two parties of candidates for the Council of the Assembly of the Republic.

“We already proposed in the previous legislature to vote on any proposed name for the vice-president of parliament, in accordance with the Constitution,” said Hugo Soares.

The leader of the Social Democrats believes that the Constitution “says very clearly that the four largest parties must appoint a ‘deputy’ to the Assembly of the Republic.”

“What we will do is vote for every name that is on the ballot, be it PS, IL or Chega. We have informed the entire panel that we will vote for any name,” he said.

Asked whether this would violate the “no is no” repeated by Luis Montenegro regarding the agreements with Chega, he replied: “Abiding by democratic rules, adhering to the Constitution does not violate any agreements, we are not playing with words, it is democratic.” the normality of this functioning is the restoration of the prestige of institutions.”

When asked whether PSD deputies should comply with this directive – this did not happen in the previous legislature, and the names proposed by Chega always fell short of the required absolute majority – Hugo Soares was categorical.

“I have no doubt that SDP MPs will carry out the instructions given either by the leader of parliament or whoever they propose to be,” he said.
