Pedro Nuno Santos on Tuesday appointed Marcos Perestrello as vice president of the Assembly of the Republic (AR).
The Socialist leader also said that there is an understanding on the right, between the SDP and Chega. “Today’s big news is that after so long of separation and distancing, when necessary, the SDP and Chega have come to an understanding,” he said.
Pedro Nuno Santos refused to comment on whether he thought PSD leader Luis Montenegro’s “no-no” to dialogue with Chega had failed, but reiterated that it could “confirm the existence of mutual understanding between PSD and Chega.”
Marcos Perestrello was Secretary of State for Defense from 2009 to 2011 and from 2015 to 2018. He is currently part of the National Secretariat of the Socialist Party, the main core of the socialist leadership, and since 2019 has been president of the parliamentary defense committee.
In the last legislative body, the PS nominated deputy Edite Estrela for the post of vice-president of the Assembly of the Republic.
Pedro Nuno Santos said the party will make a decision and elect the next leader of parliament only next week.
The PS Secretary General justified this decision by the fact that the PS parliamentary group has not yet been formed, given that there are elected deputies who work in the government and who will begin working in parliament only next week.
“We will hold these elections only when we have all the current members of the government and elected deputies,” he said.
