The Socialist parliamentary leader said on Tuesday that the PSD had never contacted the PS to reach an agreement on the parliamentary presidency and refused to foresee what he would do, despite stressing that Francisco Assis had “won two elections.”
Speaking to journalists at the Assembly of the Republic, Eurico Brillante Díaz stressed that the PS parliamentary group “has never been contacted by another parliamentary group, in particular the PSD parliamentary group, to reach any agreement regarding a candidate for the presidency of the Assembly of the Republic.”
The leader of the PS parliament said that the Socialists put forward their candidates for the parliamentary table – “a vice-president, a secretary and two vice-secretaries” – and initially chose not to put any name forward for the presidency because there was an “agreement between the Democratic Alliance (AD) and Chega.”
“This public agreement was announced yesterday. [segunda-feira] and today, I must say, not without surprise, Mr. Aguiar-Branco was not elected, which is a clear violation of the negotiation agreement between AD and Chega,” he stressed.
It was only, he continued, “in the face of uncertainty and the obvious fact that this agreement had collapsed in the eyes of the Portuguese, the PS presented a candidate” Francisco Assis, who “received two votes.”
“Any attempt to involve the PS in negotiations, in preliminary agreements, is an attempt that does not respect the truth and what happened yesterday and today,” he said.
Asked whether the PS is open to negotiations with the PSD, Brillante Díaz only emphasized that the colleges agreed that nominations could be presented until 11:00 this Wednesday and then voted on at 12:00.
When asked whether the PS intends to support the candidacy of Francisco Assis, the leader of the Socialist parliament replied: “I cannot say more, I would just like to emphasize that our comrade Francisco Assis has won two elections.”
Parliament will reconvene on Wednesday at 12:00 for a new vote for the presidency of the Assembly of the Republic after three failed attempts today, with nominations due until 11:00.
