The President of the Liberal Initiative, Rui Rocha, accused Chegu of joining the PS to prevent the election of José Pedro Aguiar-Branco as President of the Assembly of the Republic.
“The first point is that a few minutes after the start of this legislative assembly, we had evidence of an alliance between Chega and the PS, a majority between Chega and the PS,” Rui Rocha told reporters.
According to the liberal, “Chega is an unreliable party. It will bite the bullet at the first opportunity and does not fulfill what it promises.”
This Tuesday, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco was not elected President of the Assembly of the Republic. There were 89 votes for the deputy, 134 empty votes and 7 zero votes.
The Rules of the Assembly of the Republic determine that the Chairman of Parliament is elected at the first plenary meeting of the legislative body by an absolute majority of votes of the current deputies (116).
Aguiar-Branco had 89 votes, 134 white votes and seven yes votes.
“If no candidate receives that many votes, a second vote is immediately held in which only the two candidates with the most votes who have not withdrawn their candidacy compete. If no candidate is elected, the process resumes,” the statement said. Rules of procedure.
António Filipe, who presided over the first plenary session, declared the candidate “unelected”.
PSD parliamentary leader Joaquim Miranda Sarmento immediately asked for work to be suspended for 30 minutes, which was granted and resumed at 5:30 p.m.
