Ventura guarantees Montenegro that he will not count on Chegu and he will have to rule together with the PS

This Wednesday, Chegi’s leader assured the prime minister-designate that he will not count on his party in this political cycle and will have to govern together with the PS, after several political forces accused him of institutional blockade.

During the period of speeches after the speech of the new President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, André Ventura believed that when drawing up the parliamentary table, the PSD had a choice: “either to get closer to the right, or to choose our usual travel partners,” alluding to the PS.

“Today Luis Montenegro chose and had no doubt: the path is to manage the PS, to conclude an agreement with the PS. Luis Montenegro, face to face I tell you: you will govern with the PS, because you will not count on Chegu in this political cycle,” he said to long applause from his bench.

This intervention by Andre Ventura came after most parties accused Chega of creating an institutional blockade by rejecting the name of José Pedro Aguiar-Branco as President of Parliament.

Future PSD parliamentary leader Hugo Soares was the only one who did not directly address this impasse, congratulating Aguiar-Branco but “also wishing him good luck in carrying out his duties” and asking all judges to be able to “respect the value of trust” of the Portuguese.

The SDP’s commitments are directed “to specific people, to those who have nothing to do with political issues,” he assured.

In turn, the parliamentary leader of the Social Democratic Party, Eurico Brillante Diaz, promised “programmatic political opposition to the right-wing government,” but without being “opposition to the country or blocking democratic institutions.”

“The President here today is the first among us, because the responsible party is against it, but it is not against the country and does not block such an institution as the Assembly of the Republic. We will have enough time to outline a clear division of water in the political options (…) they are not counting on us, this will lead to further degradation of the institutions of the Republic and the Assembly of the Republic,” he said.

IL leader Mariana Leitan accused the PS and Chegu of uniting “in the blockade of the country” and noted that the impasse over the parliamentary presidency shows that “a populist and irresponsible party that has no solution for the country cannot be trusted”, also pointing out to the “end of PS hegemony” with elections.

The leader of the BE parliament, Fabian Figueiredo, expressed the hope that Aguiar-Branco will “uncompromisingly defend parliamentary democracy” and that he will “make every effort to avoid the capture of the Assembly of the Republic in power games by those who simply focus on its degradation.”

“The law is confusion, confusion and confusion, they do not even understand each other at the table of the Assembly of the Republic. (…) We have no doubt, however, that we will not witness this unfortunate arm-wrestling when the time has come to defend the privileges of economic groups, he said.

The parliamentary leader of the PCP, Paula Santos, believed that the election of the President of Parliament was a “regrettable series” that, despite “maneuvers and pretense regarding agreements and disagreements, does not deceive the definition of goals that unite the right and their rapprochement in the service of monopoly capital.”

For her part, Livra parliamentary leader Isabel Méndez López expressed regret that Aguiar-Branco did not speak to his party before his election and wondered how “he will prevent deputies from insulting other deputies.”

SDS leader Nuno Melo accused Chega of “blocking the normal functioning of democratic institutions”, believing that he was “playing with parliament”, and said that the centrists would show that two deputies can be worth “much more” than 50.

PAN’s sole deputy, Ines de Souza Real, lamented that this legislature brings “big problems” and “setbacks”, especially in terms of gender equality, given that fewer women are represented in parliament, and assured Chegu that “nothing will happen ” pass.”
