The 21-year-old footballer had his legs amputated after being hospitalized with flu-like symptoms.

An amateur soccer player had both legs amputated after being hospitalized with flu-like symptoms in the UK. The operation was done a few days before his 21st birthday.

Levi Dewey was hospitalized on December 7 last year, but his health deteriorated and he ended up suffering from multiple organ failure after contracting influenza B and developing a pneumococcal infection.

Doctors told Levy that he had only a 30% chance of survival. The young man was an athlete and led an active and healthy lifestyle. He played for the English club Willington FC.

The young man spent 14 days in an artificial coma. Due to the severity of the infection, doctors advised Levi that both legs would need to be amputated below the knee.

“Levi is optimistic about the future and grateful to be alive after all the events that changed his life,” the family wrote on the fundraising page to support the player after the operation.
