The Assembly of the Republic is debating this Wednesday a proposal by BE to set up a parliamentary commission of inquiry to oversee the political management of TAP, which guaranteed approval, and another proposal by Chega, which is to be rejected.
According to the parliamentary agenda, the debate will last almost an hour. The proposals will be voted on later Friday.
The investigation proposed by the blockers guaranteed approval, as the PS, which has an absolute majority in parliament, announced that it would make it possible, as did the SDP. Enough’s proposal, including in the sense that parliament created a commission to investigate the airline’s activities, should be “rejected” by parliament.
On January 6, BE submitted to Parliament a text proposing that a commission of inquiry “under the political control of the TAP leadership” focus, in particular, between 2020 and 2022, on investigating the entry and exit of former ruler Alexandra Reis and protection duties in the adopted decisions.
The blockers want Parliament to investigate “the process of co-opting, appointing or hiring Alexandra Reis for the administration” of the airline, as well as “other administrators and the conditions for applying the relevant legal framework.”
The party also wants clarification on “the process and nature of the appointment of Alexandra Reis to the NAV board of directors and the possible connection with the withdrawal process from the TAP board of directors.”
The subject of the parliamentary investigation that BE defends is also the process of dismissal of members of the governing bodies of the TAP and the “compensation practices”, as well as “remuneration paid to members of the governing bodies” in its various components.
“The quality of the information provided to the shareholder and the involvement of decision makers in decision making in TAP, SGPS and TAP, SA” is also part of the commission’s objective, as are the airline’s management decisions “which could be detrimental to the interests of the company and therefore the public interest.”
BE wants Parliament to further investigate “the oversight functions of both the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Infrastructure in decisions made by TAP, SGPS and TAP, SA.”
Chega’s proposal is aimed at “overseeing the management of TAP and the use of public funds allocated to it, namely the payment of bonuses and compensation to persons holding leadership and administrative positions in the company.”
The party wants parliament to also clarify “the full contours that led TAP, a company in financial difficulties and the target of a restructuring process funded and controlled by the Portuguese state, to pay compensation of 500 thousand euros; the circumstances of payment of said compensation” and “irrespective of whether the ministries responsible for the matter knew or intervened.”
