PS Azores on Tuesday insisted on the need to find a solution that will solve the problem of the flow of fish from the western group, arguing that “after persistent warnings” the situation “remains unresolved”.
In a press release, the party states that the parliamentary group PS Açores sent a request to the Regional Legislative Assembly on Monday, insisting that the regional government (PSD/CDS-PP/PPM) “solve the problem of fish drainage from the western group (Corvo and Flores), which, after persistent warnings from the sector and the Socialist Party of the Azores, remains unresolved.”
According to Azores Socialist MP Lubelio Mendonça, the first signatory of the request, this problem represents a “recurrent and dramatic situation”, the direct consequence of which is “a very significant devaluation of all the fish caught in these two islands of the Azores.”
The request, also signed by deputies José Eduardo and Gualberto Rita, asks the Azores government the volume of fish that was transported per day and by air from the islands of Corvo and Flores between January 1, 2023 and March 25. 2024.”
According to lawmaker Lubelio Mendonça, mentioned in the note, the fish “remains unsold on these islands” because flights serving Flores and Corvo “do not have the capacity to export fish in sufficient quantities.”
The socialist parliamentarian found it unacceptable that the regional government was “departing from its functions by ceasing to serve all the islands.”
“What solution does the regional government of the Azores recommend to solve this problem? Why has not an integrated transport system been created to allow fish transported from these two islands of the Western Group to reach the mainland on the same day?” are other questions asked by PS Açores deputies.
Socialist parliamentarians also want to know whether the regional government of the Azores has any estimate of the losses caused to Western Group fishermen by the “successive delays caused by the failure of SATA” and what solutions the coalition government should propose.
