Prime Minister Luis Montenegro’s first foreign trip is due to take place in Madrid, Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel said on Thursday.
“We have begun [com uma reunião] with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain [José Manuel Albares]yesterday [quarta-feira] and today we are already preparing what, in principle, will be the first foreign trip of the Prime Minister, namely to Madrid,” said Paulo Rangel following a meeting at the headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Brussels.
The minister believed the ministerial meeting, which coincided with NATO’s 75th anniversary ceremony, provided “an opportunity for the new government to engage with some of the most important players” in the international geopolitical context, namely US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The first official visit of the previous prime minister, socialist António Costa, took place in Cape Verde on January 19, 2016.
At the time, the government justified its choice of Cape Verde by saying it prioritized relations with Portuguese-speaking countries.
Pedro Passos Coelho’s first foreign trip also took place in Madrid at the end of August 2011, as part of a European tour that also took the former prime minister to Berlin and Paris.
