Madeira approves increase in minimum wage to 785 euros

The Legislative Assembly of Madeira approved this Wednesday, in a final global vote, an increase in the minimum monthly remuneration to €785 in 2023, an increase of €62 from last year.

The regional government’s proposal (PSD/CDS-PP) was generally approved in the plenary session of the Parliament of Madeira on 26 January, with positive votes from PSD, CDS, PS and JPP and against PCP.

This Wednesday, this initiative received the same vote in the plenary session, after it was unanimously approved by the specialty this week.

In her presentation, the Regional Secretary for Social Inclusion and Citizenship, Rita Andrade, said that this was “the largest increase in the regional minimum wage since 2015”, considering it a “historic increase”.

The official stressed that this value represented “an increase of 8.6% over the previous year and an increase of 3.3% over the nationally mandated minimum wage.”

According to Rita Andrade, “the region has historically, since 1987, practiced an average increase of the minimum wage of 2% over the national level, except for those years when this increase was frozen.” managed to go further.

According to the official, “since 2015, in Madeira and Porto Santo, the minimum wage in the region has increased by almost 270 euros”, which means an increase of 52%.

At this plenary meeting, the only MP of the PCP, Ricardo Lume, stated that “even with this increase” due to the current economic situation and “at a time when the regional government promotes growth, the people of Madeira will lose the account” and the minimum remuneration is “not enough”.
