Pedro Nuno Santos accuses the government of sharing an agenda with the far right

This Friday, the secretary general of the Social Democratic Party accused the Democratic Alliance government of sharing a political agenda with far-right parties, “a division that was clearly expressed” in the inaugural speech of the new Prime Minister of Portugal.

“We are witnessing the traditional right taking over the banner of the far right, as is already happening in Portugal this Friday,” Pedro Nuno Santos said in Portimao, Algarve.

During his speech at the opening of the European Socialist Party’s annual meeting of the Committee of the Regions in the Algarve city, the Socialist leader said this approach “was clear from the very beginning during the inauguration of the Portuguese Prime Minister.” speech”, Luis Montenegro.

According to Pedro Nuno Santos, “there are more similarities between the parties of the traditional right, the so-called classical right, and the parties of the extreme right than what we hear.”

“The traditional right, when it needs to be governed, does not hesitate to ally with the far right, and in recent years we have seen the progress of the far right in Europe,” he said.

According to the PS general secretary, “the similarities between the right and the far right” are visible across Europe, “where they govern together, where the traditional right has felt the need to form an alliance to govern.”

“Either they rule the far right or they raise their flags. They don’t rule the far right, but they take over part of their agenda,” he said.

Pedro Nuno Santos warned of the importance of socialists maintaining “their ideology and fighting new alliances” to respond to people’s problems and maintain democracy and a democratic state.

“There is an ideology, there is a different politics, and socialists have shown over the years that we are seriously different from the work that the right is doing,” he concluded.
