Mariana Mortagua says SNS’s credibility is at stake and calls for sanctions on Portuguese-Brazilian twins

BE coordinator Mariana Mortagua this Friday called for sanctions against the twins being treated at the Santa Maria Hospital, considering that the credibility of SNS is at stake, and said that Chega “wants a show” with a parliamentary investigation.

On the sidelines of the “Protect the SNS, Fulfill April” campaign, which took place at the Ministry of Health in Lisbon, Mariana Mortagua was questioned by journalists about the report of the General Inspectorate of Health Activities (IGAS), which concluded that access to neuropediatric consultation was limited by the Portuguese -Brazilian twins treated at Santa Maria Hospital with drugs costing millions of euros was illegal.

“The Santa Maria case is a serious case, access to social networks should be carried out according to the rules, not through wedges. There should be no personal contacts, no one’s power, no fact of access to a member of a public body that determines access to social networks,” he argued.

According to the BU leader, after the investigation has reached its conclusions, it is now necessary that parliament have access to them – the party has already submitted a request for this purpose – but it is important that “consequences also follow from these conclusions.”

“Of course, there will be disciplinary consequences, which may come now given the conclusions of the report, and then criminal consequences, which will result from the assessment of the prosecutor’s office, which already has the document,” he said. emphasized.

For Mariana Mortagua, “this is not simply a case of influence involving the President of the Republic and the government,” but rather a case of “defending the SNS and its authority.”

“Trust in public services is guaranteed by the quality of the services they provide, that is beyond doubt, but it is also guaranteed because citizens know that their access is equal and fair. It cannot be knowledge, telephone directory, power or money that determines access to social networks,” he said.

When asked about the commission of inquiry into this controversial matter announced the day before by Chega, the BE leader replied that “what matters now is that the Assembly of the Republic knows about this report” and that there are “disciplinary sanctions and criminal sanctions if the Ministry of Public understands that they should press charges.”

“A commission of inquiry in this scenario will only delay the acceptance of consequences, disciplinary sanctions and the criminal process itself. What with this proposal does not want justice, he wants spectacle, and spectacle does not do justice,” he criticized.

In the findings of the inspection report published on Thursday, IGAS said that “lawfulness requirements for the two children’s access to a neuropediatric consultation were not met” because the planning of the consultation did not comply with regulations governing users’ access to the National Health Service.

IGAS also concluded that the provision of medical care to children was carried out “without any facts worthy of any blame.”

Former Secretary of State Antonio Lacerda Sales, according to a controversial report, criticized IGAS for giving less weight to his word than to that of his private secretary, who contacted Santa Maria Hospital to schedule the twins’ admission.

The case of two twins living in Brazil who acquired Portuguese nationality and received Zolgensma in Portugal in 2020, worth a total of four million euros, was published by TVI in November and is still being investigated by the Public. Prosecutor’s Office – General Republic of the Republic (GGR).
