PS will take over the chairmanship of the TAP parliamentary commission of inquiry, despite having argued that the seat should go to Chega, without revealing yet who will be nominated for the position.
At the last leaders’ meeting, it was explained that there was a draw between Chega and PS in accordance with Hondt’s usual method in the allocation of chairmen of parliamentary committees, and the decision was left at that Wednesday’s meeting.
“The tie-break has so far been decided by the services of the Assembly of the Republic, giving priority to the parliamentary group with the largest number of chairmen, the largest number of deputies. The PS parliamentary group has a different understanding, given that if nothing is said in the Standing Orders, the electoral law should apply and give preference to those with fewer elected representatives,” the president of the socialist group, Eurico Brillante Diaz, told reporters at the end of the leaders’ conference.
That is, for the PS “the procedure was clear and the chairmanship will be for Chega.”
However, he added, other parties advocated that the current legislative session should retain the procedure followed so far and that this situation should be clearly reflected in the current version of the Rules, with new rules starting to be introduced in September at new session.
“We don’t want to turn a procedural question into a political one, so this president will be PS,” Brillante Dias suggested.
When asked who he would nominate for this seat, the leader of the socialist parliament did not yet want to make it public.
Asked by the media about the news from Público that former infrastructure minister Pedro Nuno Santos would only take over as deputy in July, the PS parliamentary leader said “it’s an individual decision”.
“I say the same as last time: this parliamentary group is the parliamentary group of Pedro Nuno Santos of his party, without prejudice to the circumstances under which he returns to the parliamentary group, we welcome him with great pleasure. And I am sure that with your participation we will have a more full-fledged parliamentary group,” he said only.
The Assembly of the Republic is debating this Wednesday a proposal by BE to set up a parliamentary commission of inquiry to oversee the political management of TAP, which guaranteed approval, and another proposal by Chega, which is to be rejected.
The proposals will be voted on later Friday.
On January 6, BE submitted to Parliament a text proposing that a commission of inquiry “under the political control of the TAP leadership” focus, in particular, between 2020 and 2022, on investigating the entry and exit of former ruler Alexandra Reis and protection duties in the adopted decisions.
The blockers want Parliament to investigate “the process of co-opting, appointing or hiring Alexandra Reis for the administration” of the airline, as well as “other administrators and the conditions for applying the relevant legal framework.”
The party also wants clarification on “the process and nature of the appointment of Alexandra Reis to the NAV board of directors and the possible connection with the withdrawal process from the TAP board of directors.”
The subject of the parliamentary investigation that BE defends is also the process of dismissal of members of the governing bodies of the TAP and the “compensation practices”, as well as “remuneration paid to members of the governing bodies” in its various components.
