When asked about these remarks by Judge Maria Benedita Urbano, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa began by stating that “the president respects the decisions of the Constitutional Court” and that “what the court says is sovereign and should be considered and respected.”
“In addition to being the President of the Republic, who should be very impartial in these matters, I am a professor of constitutional law, I voted for the Constitution, I taught the Constitution for a long time. what I have known for 40 years or so is that this is the correct position,” he added.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that since taking office as head of state, he has raised a preventive check “very few times” and confirmed that he intends to do it again in connection with a parliamentary decree changing the legal regime of professional public associations.
