The President of Mozambique called early pregnancy one of the problems of gender equality in the country

Mozambique’s President Filipe Nyusi this Sunday identified early pregnancy and premature unions as among the main challenges on the “path” to gender equality in the country, on the day Mozambique celebrates Women’s Day.

“It is critical to recognize that challenges remain on the path to full gender equality (…) In the area of health, challenges still remain due to the prevalence of multiple structural, regulatory, social and economic factors that occur at all stages of women’s and girls’ lives, preventing their development, including early pregnancy and premature unions,” said Filipe Nyusi in an address to the nation on the occasion of Women’s Day.

Apart from early pregnancies and premature unions, Mozambique’s head of state continued, maternal mortality and gender-based violence are other problems facing Mozambican women, although he stressed the “remarkable progress” in recent years.
