The Commission on Transparency and the Status of Deputies approved this Wednesday an extension to the suspension of former Infrastructure and Housing Minister Pedro Nuno Santos, who is expected to return to parliament in July.
The extension of the suspension of Pedro Nuno Santos (PS), put forward by the newspaper Público, was approved this Wednesday by the Commission on Transparency and the Statute of Deputies.
Initially, the socialist asked to suspend his mandate for 30 days, which was approved on 4 January. He now demanded an extension to the maximum allowed by the Statute of Deputies in each legislature of six months.
Pedro Nuno Santos, who will still be replaced by MP Rosa Venancio, will have to return to parliament in early July or resign.
On January 4, Parliament approved the suspension for 30 days of the mandate of Pedro Nuno Santos.
At the time, the secretary of the Bureau of the Assembly of the Republic, Maria da Luz Rocinha, indicated that Pedro Nuno Santos’s mandate as an MP was “already suspended” since March last year, “because he is a member of the XXIII government”.
The former Minister of Infrastructure and Housing topped the PS list for Aveiro in the last legislative elections.
Nominated as one of the potential candidates to replace António Coste in PS leadership, Pedro Nuno Santos stepped down from government at the end of the year to “take political responsibility” for the €500,000 compensation paid by TAP to former Secretary of State Treasury Alexandra Reis leaves the airline.
