The PCP marked NATO’s 75th anniversary this Monday, emphasizing that the alliance “does not seek or defend peace” and “essentially serves as the armed wing of the interests” of the United States, calling for its dissolution.

In a statement, the PKP press service said that 75 years after the founding of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the current international situation demonstrates “the falsity of NATO’s claims as a so-called defense organization.”

“NATO, through its actions, demonstrates that it does not seek or defend peace. On the contrary, it blocks prospects and efforts to negotiate towards peace, as is happening once again in the war in Ukraine, preferring to inflame and intervene in the conflict. in an increasingly direct form,” the document says.

For the party, “NATO is a military-political bloc of an offensive nature, which inherently serves as the armed wing of the interests of the United States of America, as well as other imperialist powers.”

“The truth is that for 75 years of its existence, NATO has instigated, supported and waged wars of aggression in violation of international law and the most basic human rights, as exemplified by the aggression against Yugoslavia – the first war in Europe since the end of World War II – in Afghanistan , Iraq, Libya or Syria,” he refers.

The PCP accuses the United States, NATO and the European Union (EU) of no longer being able to “conceal their status as Israel’s complicit in the genocide carried out in Palestine” by demonstrating “atrocious hypocrisy in the face of the massacre of tens of thousands of Palestinians and the violation of the most basic human rights and international law.”

On the other hand, the party also claims that the United States, NATO and the EU are “expanding and intensifying confrontation with all countries that they consider to be an obstacle to their strategy of dominance”, be it through sanctions, “agreements” and “Partnerships”. tentacles” or “the deployment of more military facilities along Russia’s borders and in the Asia-Pacific region.”

At the national level, the PKP states that it opposes “the foreign policy of successive PS PSD governments, characterized in essence by following and subordinating the interests and strategies of the great imperialist powers, as well as by focusing on the strengthening and expansion of NATO, the militarization of the EU and its bellicose policies.” .

For the party, Portugal’s participation in the Alliance is also “a determining factor for the sovereignty and independence of Portugal, the subordination of the Portuguese armed forces and the standardization of their organization.”

“The dissolution of NATO is an essential goal for the establishment of national sovereignty and world peace, with which the process of secession of the country from its structures must be articulated within the framework of Portugal’s inalienable right to decide to withdraw,” he states. myself.

The PKP also recalls that NATO was founded in 1949, “six years before the creation of the Warsaw Pact,” and had the goal of “confrontation with the Soviet Union and the camp of socialist countries,” with the “Portuguese fascist dictatorship” being one of its founding members.

The party also claims that the longevity of the Estado Novo was “inseparable from the support that it was guaranteed by NATO and its major powers” and emphasizes that “the liberation revolution of 25 April was the object of pressure and threats from NATO, the purpose of which was to condition the will of the Portuguese people” .
