A working meeting was held on Thursday morning at the Lisbon City Council (CML) to evaluate options for World Youth Day (WYD) venues. The meeting sought to find solutions to the cost of the event, which is a “big problem” for the organization.
Lisbon City Council and the JMJ Lisboa 2023 Foundation classified the environment in which the meeting took place as “very positive” following a controversy over World Youth Day spending.
As far as could be ascertained, no changes to the current plan had yet been announced, and the statement had only been submitted after discussion between the various parties.
According to the CML communiqué, this meeting was attended by the head of the municipality, Carlos Moedas; Auxiliary Bishop of Lisbon and President of the WYD Lisbon Foundation 2023 D. Américo Aguiar; CML Vice President Filipe Anacoreta Correia; António Lamas, President of the Society for Urban Restoration; responsible for Mota Engil and various members of the respective CML and Fundação JMJ Lisboa 2023 project teams.
“The technical teams will continue to work diligently so that new solutions can be presented as soon as possible on the appeals of the Mayor of Lisbon and the Auxiliary Bishop of Lisbon,” the statement said.
World Youth Day will take place from 1 to 6 August in Lisbon, with an additional 1.5 million people expected.
