Seven islands in the Azores will be under an orange warning from Tuesday afternoon due to heavy rain that may be accompanied by thunderstorms, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
The IPMA statement said the islands of the central group of Azores (Terceira, Graciosa, Pico, Faial and Sao Jorge) will be under an orange warning from 12:00 local time on Tuesday (13:00 in Lisbon) until midnight.
The islands of the eastern group of the Azores (Sao Miguel and Santa Maria) will also be under an orange warning from 15:00 to midnight.
On these seven Azores islands, IPMA justifies the orange warning for “locally heavy” precipitation, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms.
In the western group (Flores and Corvo) there is also a yellow warning for rain until 00:00.
The orange warning is the second-most severe on the scale and is issued in “moderate to high risk weather situations,” according to the IPMA.
A yellow warning is issued whenever a risk situation arises for certain activities due to weather conditions.
